Michael M Miller, MD, DFASAM, DLFAPA, is a board-certified general and addiction psychiatrist and is certified in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

After practicing Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry full-time in Wisconsin for 35 years Dr. Miller is now in a half-time Academic Medicine position, providing clinical teaching in the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He is also on the clinical faculty of the Medical College of Wisconsin, working with its Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

Dr. Miller also maintains a small private practice limited to the treatment of health professionals and other licensees with addiction, and has an active consultation practice, consulting to health systems, health plans, state governments, and as an expert witness in cases locally and nationally. He recently served as a staff psychiatrist and addictionologist for the Drug Court and OWI Court in Rock County.

Dr. Miller is Past President and Board Chair of ASAM, of the Wisconsin Society of Addiction Medicine, and the Dane County Medical Society. He is the immediate past Speaker for the Wisconsin Medical Society, and a former Director of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine (ACAAM). He has represented Wisconsin in the AMA House of Delegates since 2000, 14 of those years as Delegate. He has served on the AMA Council on Science and Public Health, an elected position, since 2014, and is its chair for 2019-2020.

Dr. Miller has lectured throughout the United States and internationally on addiction medicine, general psychiatry, and addiction psychiatry topics, as well as on topics related to medical economics, medical quality, medical ethics, and public health.

Dr. Miller has been elected for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® from 2007 to 2018. In 2013, he received The ASAM Annual Award for his contributions to the field of addiction medicine. He was named the national physician Clinician of the Year by Addiction Professional magazine in 2011, and in 2019, he received ASAM’s highest honor, its John P. McGovern Award for his contributions to our understanding of addiction and society.
